Last fall writer Mark McLauglin contacted us through the website looking for pictures to
illustrate a series of articles he was writing for Tahoe Guide, a Tahoe Sierra-based magazine,
about the historic ski clubs of Donner Summit. I sent him vintage images I collected for the 80 th anniversary of OSC a few years ago, and more recent images from Valerie Vincent, Rich
Luibrand, Jamie Isbester and others.
The first of two stories came out in December, focusing on the very early days up to the creation of Clair Tappaan Lodge. The second, which appeared in January, covered the history of twelve clubs from their creation. They didn’t use many pictures in the story, which Mark laments: “As publications struggle to stay afloat, my word allowance has shrunk, and now there is often only enough space for one photo.” The one image they did use is a nice vintage shot of the members of the OSC at Sugar Bowl in 1939, with someone holding the club logo bottom center.
The article mentions a place I had not heard of, historic Hoyfjellet Lodge. It looks quite
splendid, comes with 22 acres, and a few years ago was for sale. A steal at $1,950,000, but no
longer on the market, it seems. Gives an idea of what our Lodge might be worth if privately
owned.
McLaughlin is the author of six books about Tahoe-area subjects. He sent me a copy of
Longboards to Olympics: A Century of Tahoe Winter Sports, which I will leave at the Lodge the next time I get up.
